The Ultimate
Cruise Guide for Australians
Your complete insider's guide to cruising. From choosing the right cabin to making the most of port days, with all the tips and hacks we share with our clients.
Why Cruise?
Cruising is one of the most relaxing ways to travel. You unpack once, and wake up in a new destination every few days without the hassle of airports, hotel check-ins, or lugging suitcases around. Everything's included in one upfront price – your accommodation, meals, entertainment, and transport between destinations. It's a holiday where you can be as active or as relaxed as you want, and there's genuinely something for everyone.
Popular Cruise Regions from Australia
Pacific Islands Fiji, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, and New Zealand are the bread and butter of Australian cruising. These tropical and scenic destinations are accessible year-round, with cruises ranging from quick 3-night samplers to comprehensive 14-day adventures. Perfect for first-timers or families wanting guaranteed sunshine.
Southeast Asia Longer voyages (10-21 days) explore Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Hong Kong. Rich culture, incredible food, and exotic ports make these cruises popular with couples and retirees who have the time to really unwind.
Tasmania and Australian Coast Circumnavigating Tasmania or exploring the Australian coastline offers incredible scenery without needing a passport. These shorter cruises are ideal for testing the waters before committing to longer international voyages.
Repositioning and World Cruises When ships relocate between seasons – say, from Australia to Alaska, or Australia to the Mediterranean – you can snag incredible value on one-way itineraries. These longer cruises (20+ days) are a dream for anyone with time to spare and a love of being at sea.
We can talk you through every option and match you with the perfect itinerary based on what you want to see, how long you can travel, and your budget. That's what we're here for.
Choosing Your Cabin: What Actually Matters
Cabins range from compact inside staterooms to sprawling suites with butler service. Here's what makes a difference:
Inside Cabins No windows, but they're perfectly comfortable if you're planning to spend your days exploring the ship and ports. Great value, and you'll sleep just fine in the darkness. Ideal for families on a budget or anyone who won't spend much time in the room.
Oceanview Cabins A window or porthole makes a surprising difference to your sense of space and helps you keep track of time. Worth the small upgrade if you like natural light or tend to feel claustrophobic.
Balcony Cabins Your own private outdoor space for morning coffee, evening drinks, or watching the ship pull into port. Absolutely worth it for scenic routes like New Zealand's fiords or the Norwegian coastline. If you're cruising somewhere beautiful, this is where you'll want to be.
Suites More living space, often separate bedrooms, and perks like priority boarding, concierge service, access to exclusive restaurants or lounges, and sometimes even complimentary drinks packages. Luxury cruising at its finest.
Cabin Location Tips:
Mid-ship cabins on lower decks feel the least movement – crucial if you're worried about seasickness
Avoid cabins directly below nightclubs, pools, or the jogging track unless you're a very heavy sleeper
Cabins near elevators are convenient but can be noisy
Forward cabins sometimes have obstructed views or more motion but are usually cheaper
We'll help you choose the perfect cabin based on your priorities, whether that's value, view, or VIP treatment.
First-Time Cruiser: What to Expect
Embarkation Day You'll check in at the cruise terminal (bring your passport, boarding documents, and any health forms). Your luggage gets whisked away and delivered to your cabin later. Head straight to the buffet for lunch while you wait for your room to be ready – you'll beat the crowds and start your holiday on a full stomach.
Your Cabin It'll feel compact compared to a hotel room, but clever storage makes it work. Cabin walls are metal, so bring magnetic hooks to hang hats, bags, or jewellery. You'll have a safe for valuables, bathrobes, a TV, tea and coffee facilities, and plenty of towels. If you need extra pillows, blankets, or hangers, just ask your cabin steward.
The Muster Drill Before the ship can leave port, everyone must attend a mandatory safety drill. You'll learn where your muster station is and how to use a life jacket. It takes 15-20 minutes and it's non-negotiable – the ship won't sail until everyone's attended.
Daily Schedules Every evening, you'll find a printed schedule (or digital version on the app) listing the next day's activities, dining times, port arrival information, and entertainment. Highlight what interests you. There's always way more happening than you can possibly do.
Dining Most ships have a main dining room with set times or flexible dining, plus a casual buffet that's open most of the day. Specialty restaurants (Italian, steakhouse, sushi) cost extra but are usually excellent and worth trying once. Some cruise lines now include these, which is a huge bonus.
Dress Codes Most nights are casual (think nice jeans and a collared shirt). Some ships have formal or smart-casual nights – a dress or suit is perfect, but a sports jacket and trousers works fine. No one's checking you at the door, but it's fun to dress up occasionally.
Hidden Treasures Onboard
The Library or Quiet Lounges Every ship has peaceful spaces tucked away where you can read, play board games, or just escape the crowds. Perfect for introverts or anyone needing a break from the pool deck energy.
Complimentary Room Service Most cruise lines offer free room service for breakfast or late-night snacks. Having coffee and pastries delivered to your balcony as you sail into port is a genuine luxury.
Speciality Classes Many ships offer free classes – cooking demonstrations, wine tastings (often free samples), art auctions, fitness classes, dance lessons, or lectures on the destinations you're visiting. Check the daily schedule.
Late-Night Buffets and Snacks Midnight pizza, ice cream stations, 24-hour coffee and tea – you'll never go hungry on a cruise. Some ships even have proper late-night buffets if you're a night owl.
Self-Service Laundromats If your ship has them (ask us when booking), they're gold for longer cruises. A few dollars saves you from packing three weeks' worth of clothes or paying for expensive laundry service.
The Top Deck at Sunrise or Sunset While everyone's at dinner or getting ready for the evening, head to the top deck. You'll often have it to yourself, and the views are spectacular.
Kids on Cruises
Cruises are phenomenal for families. Kids have their own dedicated spaces, activities, and new friends, while parents get proper downtime knowing their children are safe, entertained, and supervised.
Kids' Clubs Age-specific clubs run from early morning until late evening (sometimes later). They're free and include everything from arts and crafts for toddlers to video game tournaments and sports for teens. Kids genuinely love them – you might struggle to drag them out for dinner.
Babysitting Services Many ships offer in-cabin or group babysitting for younger children in the evenings (for a fee), so parents can enjoy adult dining or see the show.
Family-Friendly Dining Buffets are perfect for fussy eaters and families who don't want to be tied to set dining times. Some ships have dedicated kids' menus or even let children eat separately with their club friends.
Teen Spaces Dedicated teen lounges, often with video games, movies, and no adults allowed, give teenagers their own hangout. Teen programs include activities like scavenger hunts, pool parties, and late-night movies.
Connecting Cabins Two cabins with an internal door give families space to spread out while staying close. Worth requesting when you book.
Family Tips:
Book shore excursions suited to your kids' ages – some are too long or strenuous for little ones
Let kids carry a small backpack with their essentials for port days
Take a photo of your kids each morning wearing what they're wearing – if they wander off, you can show staff exactly what they look like
Establish a meeting point on the ship in case anyone gets separated
We'll make sure you're on a ship that suits your family's ages and interests, with the right cabin setup and activities to keep everyone happy.
Port Days: Making the Most of Your Time Ashore
All-Aboard Time This is the most important thing to remember: the ship will not wait for you. All-aboard time is typically 30-60 minutes before departure. Set an alarm, build in buffer time, and don't cut it fine. If you miss the ship, you're responsible for getting yourself to the next port.
Shore Excursions: Booking Through the Cruise Line The big advantage? If your tour runs late, the ship waits. You're also guaranteed to get back in time, and if something goes wrong, you have recourse. Excursions are professionally organised, insured, and vetted. The downside is they're often more expensive and can feel a bit cookie-cutter.
Independent Exploration Hiring a local guide, catching a taxi, or walking around independently is cheaper and more flexible. You can explore at your own pace and support local businesses directly. Just make sure you're back in plenty of time – leave at least an hour's buffer.
Our Recommendation? We can pre-book shore excursions for you, often at better rates than booking onboard. We know which tours are worth it, which ports are easy to explore independently, and where you'll want expert guidance. We'll also flag ports where you absolutely shouldn't go alone for safety or logistics reasons.
Port Day Tips:
Tender ports (where the ship anchors offshore and you take small boats to land) take longer to get on and off – factor this in
Bring local currency in small denominations for markets, taxis, or tips
Screenshot maps or download them offline before you leave the ship – Wi-Fi ashore can be patchy
Wear sunscreen, bring water, and have comfortable shoes
If you're not doing an excursion, some of the best days are wandering the port town, finding a local cafe, and just soaking up the atmosphere
Cruise Insider Tips and Hacks
Book Early for the Best Price and Choice Cruise pricing works a bit like airlines – the earlier you book, the better the price and the more cabin options you have. We can also lock in your booking and watch for price drops, securing you a refund or onboard credit if the price falls.
Drink Packages: Do the Maths If you're planning to have several drinks a day, a drinks package can save you money. If you're a casual drinker, you'll probably spend less paying as you go. We'll help you work out what makes sense based on your drinking habits.
Pre-Book Specialty Dining and Spa Treatments These book out, especially on sea days. Reserve in advance (before you board if possible) so you're not disappointed.
Bring a Power Board Cabins usually only have one or two power outlets. A power board (not a surge protector, which isn't allowed) means everyone can charge their devices at once.
Pack Magnetic Hooks and a Small Bag Magnetic hooks stick to cabin walls for extra storage. A small over-the-door shoe organiser (also magnetic) is brilliant for toiletries, sunscreen, and accessories. A collapsible tote bag is perfect for port days.
Eat Breakfast on Your Balcony Order room service the night before and have breakfast delivered while you sail into port. It's magical and costs nothing.
Attend the Art Auctions (Even If You're Not Buying) Free champagne, interesting commentary, and it's weirdly entertaining. You're under no pressure to bid.
Disembarkation Day: Carry Your Own Bags If you're able, carry your own luggage off the ship. You'll disembark much earlier and avoid the crowds waiting for tagged bags. Pack a change of clothes and essentials in your carry-on the night before.
Set Your Phone to Airplane Mode International roaming at sea is eye-wateringly expensive. Unless you've bought a Wi-Fi package, keep your phone offline or you'll come home to a shocking bill.
The First and Last Night Tip On your first night, the ship is often quieter as people settle in – perfect for exploring without crowds. On the last night, everyone's packing and winding down, so you'll often find great last-minute spa or restaurant availability.
What's Included and What Costs Extra
This varies by cruise line and package, so we'll clarify everything when we help you book.
Typically Included:
Your cabin
All main meals (dining room, buffet, and usually room service)
Most non-alcoholic drinks (water, juice, tea, coffee)
Onboard entertainment (shows, live music, movies, pools, fitness classes)
Kids' clubs
Typically Extra:
Alcoholic drinks and premium coffees
Specialty restaurants
Shore excursions
Spa treatments and salon services
Gratuities (these are often added to your account automatically)
Wi-Fi
Photos
Casino and shopping
Some cruise lines are moving towards more inclusive packages where drinks, Wi-Fi, gratuities, and specialty dining are included. We'll find you the best value based on what matters to you.
Seasickness: The Reality
Modern cruise ships are huge and have stabilisers that reduce movement dramatically. Most people don't feel a thing. That said, if you're prone to motion sickness, there are ways to manage it:
Book a cabin mid-ship on a lower deck where movement is minimal
Bring ginger tablets or seasickness medication from your chemist
Eat light, stay hydrated, and get fresh air regularly
Focus on the horizon, not your phone or a book
The ship's medical centre can provide stronger medication if needed
Honestly, rough seas are rare on most routes from Australia, and even if you hit some weather, it's usually just a bit of gentle rocking.
